Agastaches

Agastache  (a-GAH-sta-kee)  Giant Hyssop

Judging from customer responses, Agastaches are rapidly gaining in popularity, and with good reason. It’s hard to imagine there are many tougher and more dependable long blooming plants in such a nice array of colors. Both the flowers and leaves are very fragrant when brushed against or crushed. Agastaches grow best in full sun and well drained soils. The well drained part is especially important in winter. I suspect that most winter loses are due to excessive wetness and not to the cold.

Agastache 'Raspberry Summer' PPAF is a new variety from Terra Nova. They say "Large, dark raspberry pink blooms adorn this plant summer and into fall. Impressive clusters of flowers form attractive clumps 32" tall of bright green, fragrant foliage."

Agastache ‘Blue Fortune’ has scented foliage and soft blue flowers on long spikes over a very long bloom season. This variety is very attractive to butterflies. In an informal poll taken, our Swallowtails chose this plant 3:1 over nearby Buddleias.

Could this new variety be named for Rowan Atkinson’s character in one of the all time great British comedies? Agastache ‘Black Adder’ is a clever, if not a particularly descriptive, name. I’ve noted some European sites have the spelling as Blackadder. Flowers are described as “smokey lilac opening from dark purple buds”. I’m not exactly sure what “smokey lilac” looks like but the pics I’ve seen have the blooms light lilac with darker backing bracts. North Creek has it rated highly for bloom time and hardiness.

Agastache 'Purple Haze' is a new variety, similar in form to the Agastache 'Blue Fortune'. The supplier’s description “Vibrant violet-purple flowers with deep rose pink calyces are presented on strong, upright stems from midsummer to early fall.” I look forward to trying this one out this season.
