Anemone
(a-NEM-o-nee) Windflower |
|
The group commonly known as
Japanese Anemones (although probably originally from China) includes
A. hupehensis, A. vitifolium, A. tomentosa, and various crosses
between them. Most plants grown today are usually classed as A. x
hybrida types. These late, but long blooming gems come in both single
and double forms. The blooms are actually showy petal-like sepals
called tepals surrounding prominent yellow stamens and pistils. The
stems are wiry strong and upright, great for cuts. They will tolerate
most soil types except soggy. In very fertile, loose soils they can be
spreaders, even borderline invasive, but how could anyone class such a
treasure as invasive? Even among experts there is a great deal of
confusion and disagreement about exact descriptions of individual
cultivars. |

Anemone 'Honorine Jobert' is the classic single white Japanese
Anemone. A must for fall color, especially in the informal,
shaded border.
“When one thinks of a shady border almost the first flowers that
come to mind are the tall anemones, called collectively Japanese
Anemones...The most beautiful of all, I think, is the pure white
single form.” Margery Fish |

Anemone ‘Praecox’
is a single flowered, A. hupehensis type. Some tepals are light
pink, others are darker. Usually starts blooming a few weeks earlier
than the hybrids. I especially like this cultivar - there’s something
happy looking about the bi-colored flowers. |

Anemone
‘Prinz Heinrich’ is a semi-double form with flowers that are
usually described as deep rose. I think it has a little more red and
less purple in it than many of the dark flowered cultivars. |

Anemone ‘Bodnant
Burgundy’ is similar in color to Anemone 'Prinz Heinrich'
but with supposedly fewer tepals. To be honest I have a difficult
time telling them apart. If you have one you probably don’t need the
other. |

Anemone ‘Pamina’
is another dark semi-double, a rosy purple-pink, considered by
many to be the darkest of the Japanese Anemones. |

We added
Anemone ‘Max
Vogel’ and
Anemone ‘Serenade’ to the list the past year mainly because
Chicago Botanic rated them at the top of their extensive Anemone
trials.
Anemone ‘Max
Vogel’ has semi-double pearl pink
flowers. |

Anemone
‘Whirlwind’ is also white and large flowered, but with a
semi-double form. Sometimes the outer tepals are light green. The
inner tepals can be shorter and irregular as if ruffled by a
whirlwind. |
