These South
African succulents thrive in lean, well
drained soils in full sun. The daisy
shaped flowers need sunlight to open.
Plants root along the stems and will form
a thick mat in a short time.
Delosperma cooperi
has bright purple daisy flowers, on and
off, summer and fall. This is one of the
larger flowered species and the hardiest
we know.

Delosperma unknown? came to us
labeled Delosperma ashtonii, a plant I’d
grown before and liked. As it grew I
definitely knew it wasn’t D. ashtonii. The
flowers are very much in color and form
like Delosperma cooperi, bright
purple-magenta daisies, but the plant
habit is very prostrate, only 1-2” tall
even in bloom. I’d have left it in the
garden by itself as just another unnamed
orphan if it hadn’t turned out to be such
a darn good plant. It’s made it through
the last 2 winters here beautifully - but
the main thing is the flowering. It starts
here in late March and by late April the
blooms are just a solid mass of purple
that gradually lessens by mid summer - but
as I write this in late November there are
still a few flowers on the plant. In 2
seasons it’s spread to form a solid mat
about 4’ round. Definitely recommended.
