Euphorbias

Euphorbia (yew-FORE-bi-a) Spurge

This is a huge genus that includes such diverse plants as the Poinsettia, Crown-of-thorns, and the Garden Spurges. All have a milky sap in their stems, sometimes irritating to the skin, and inconspicuous flowers surrounded by colorful bracts. All do best in full sun and well-drained soil. Tolerant of drought and, with no serious pest problems, they are easy to grow.

The most spectacular flowering form of Spurge is Euphorbia griffithii ‘Fireglow’ with very large heads of bright red-orange in summer, above leafy green foliage. In fall the foliage turns yellow, red and orange. Very striking.

Euphorbia characias ssp. wulfenii is probably the most impressive of the group. It has green lance shaped foliage and large yellow green flowerheads with yellow eyes. A mature plant has many stems and has the impact of a small, exotic shrub. It stays evergreen in mild winters here and is reliably evergreen further south. Flower closeup.

Euphorbia amygdaloides var. robbiae makes a beautiful evergreen groundcover, producing tight rosettes of very dark green in sun or shade and tolerating lean soils. The flowerheads are lighter green, very long lasting, held above the foliage. This is a variety to try in that troublesome, root filled, shady spot where other groundcovers have failed.

Euphorbia ‘Garblesham Enchanter’ is very new and I can’t seem to find information on parentage. The leaves are grey-green and heavily suffused with burgundy in all seasons. Flower bracts are bright chartreuse. It’s the late fall and winter color that really excels - it’s the darkest burgundy form I’ve ever seen.
