Matteuccia
struthiopteris 'The King' is sometimes also called the Jumbo
Ostrich Fern.
Casa Flora says: “Huge
plume like fronds from this ancient strain of Matteuccia struthopteris
will add both beauty and depth to landscape plantings in the northern
zones. This selection of Ostrich has an enormous crown and fertile fronds
that are 50% larger than those on native Ostrich fern.”

Matteuccia struthiopteris is our largest
native fern. I have read that it grows to 10’ in the wild, but 5’ is
probably near its limit in the garden. The large fronds arise from a
central crown which has a form like a badminton shuttlecock. They spread
by underground rhizomes, relatively quickly in moist acid soils,
moderately in average garden soils. Here in the mid-Atlantic they do best
in part shade but they will tolerate some sun, especially in the north.
Very impressive in a large scale planting.

Nursery Propagated
Ferns - We do not sell ferns, or any other plants for that matter,
that have been collected in the wild. All of our ferns have been
nursery propagated. This not only protects wild populations, but
potted, nursery propagated ferns are much easier to establish in
the garden than plants dug in the wild and shipped bareroot.
