This is a genus of ancient ferns, the only members of
their family left outside Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. They
are also among our largest native ferns. Their dense, intertwined root
systems become large and wiry and are used in the culture of Orchids. All
are deciduous and prefer moist soils.
Osmunda regalis,
the Royal Fern, has a graceful,
upright habit and large bold fronds, reddish when young. The fertile
portions are brown clusters held at the tips of the central fronds,
vaguely flowerlike from a distance. In my experience this species really
thrives in an evenly moist environment and makes an outstanding pondside
plant. Osmunda regalis
var. spectabilis is the American form of Royal Fern and can be
slightly smaller than the European form. |
