Fall Fern Sale - all
ferns at least 1/3 off |
|
This is a genus of ancient ferns, the only members of
their family left outside Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. They
are also among our largest native ferns. Their dense, intertwined root
systems become large and wiry and are used in the culture of Orchids. All
are deciduous and prefer moist soils. The Cinnamon Fern,
Osmunda cinnamomea, has sterile outer
fronds that are long and graceful, from a central crown, much like an
Ostrich Fern. The common name comes from the central, brown, tomentose,
fertile fronds which slightly resemble cinnamon sticks. A large and
impressive specimen. |

Osmunda regalis,
the Royal Fern, has a graceful,
upright habit and large bold fronds, reddish when young. The fertile
portions are brown clusters held at the tips of the central fronds,
vaguely flowerlike from a distance. In my experience this species really
thrives in an evenly moist environment and makes an outstanding pondside
plant. Osmunda regalis
var. spectabilis is the American form of Royal Fern and can be
slightly smaller than the European form. |

Nursery Propagated
Ferns - We do not sell ferns, or any other plants for that matter,
that have been collected in the wild. All of our ferns have been
nursery propagated. This not only protects wild populations, but
potted, nursery propagated ferns are much easier to establish in
the garden than plants dug in the wild and shipped bareroot. |
