These Great Plant Specials have become very popular
with our customers. The plants are not just a bunch of leftovers that
we couldn’t sell, we select some of our most popular varieties and
grow them in large numbers just for these specials. It’s a great deal
for our customers, and, by growing them in large quantities and
selling them in sets of three, we reduce our handling costs
significantly, so we both benefit. |
Athyrium niponicum 'Regal
Red' is a new selection from Casa Flora. They say - “Handsome
and ruffled, this high color selection is our most requested Painted
Fern. The dark interior of the frond is contrasted by bright silver
edges making each appear more than they are. The pinnules twist a little
giving the frond a “fluffed-up” look.” Single plant price $9.95

The Ghost Fern, Athyrium
‘Ghost’, is a new hybrid cross between the Japanese Painted
and Lady Ferns. It inherited its upright form from Athyrium filix-femina,
but the fronds are thicker and more substantial. From Athyrium niponicum
‘Pictum’ it derives its silver green color. The combination of full
upright habit and silvery color make this form ideal for drifts and
masses. I really like this new variety and think it has excellent
potential as a shady groundcover. Single plant price $9.95

Athyrium otophorum
is sometimes called English Painted Fern. It’s actually native to Japan
and China and mature fronds are an attractive shiny green. The colorful
crosiers are dark maroon as they unfold. Young fronds are chartreuse
with prominent purple veining. This medium sized fern is tolerant and
easy to grow. Single plant price $8.95 ea. |

If there were a hit parade of ferns the
Japanese Painted Fern,
Athyrium niponicum ‘Pictum’,
would be a longstanding #1. Low growing and spreading, it is the most
colorful of the hardy ferns, with silver covering most of the frond,
sometimes with burgundy markings in the center. It is beautiful when
used in mass but the graceful arching habit also looks great as a single
specimen. It was formerly classified as Athyrium goeringianum 'Pictum'. Single plant price $8.95 ea. |

Dryopteris
erythrosora 'Brilliance'
is a new colorful and more brilliant form of the
Autumn Fern.
The young fronds of this cultivar are lustrous and orange. Even the
fronds at maturity, though green, hold their glossy sheen. The growth
habit is identical to the Autumn but as a whole it is dramatically more
showy. A wonderful evergreen addition to the fern garden.

Dryopteris
tokyoensis is one of our favorites of the Asian Wood Ferns. The
relatively narrow fronds are stiffly upright, in a vase form from a
central crown. It is sometimes described with light or
yellow green color … while new fronds are light green, mature fronds of
our clone (which I assume came from Dr. Mickel) have a rich, almost
blue-green color. One of the Mickel Collection™.

Onoclea
sensibilis is sometimes called Bead Fern because the dark
fertile bodies resemble upright strands of beads. In fertile
conditions it can be a real spreader, so it is not appropriate for
a small or formal setting. More tolerant of sun than most species,
it also performs well in shade. The rigid bead structures stay upright and decorative
through winter.

Selaginella
uncinata, the
Peacock Fern, is one of the most
unusual plants we grow. Also known as
Rainbow Moss, from certain angles the iridescent foliage is an
almost unbelievably brilliant blue, changing with the slightest movement
of vantage point. The leaves themselves are finely cut and densely
spreading, with the look of a beautiful and intricate oriental carpet,
fitting for a plant of Chinese origins. Plants are only winter hardy when
well established. We recommend extra protection the first winter or two.
Northern gardeners may want to consider growing this as a pot plant.

Thelypteris decursive–pinnata, the
Japanese Beech Fern,
is an attractive Asian species with
light chartreuse green fronds, very upright in habit. This is a spreader,
but a slow and steady one, unlike some near relatives that can be
borderline invasives. It naturalizes beautifully in open woods.
