If you are looking for Geraniums
with big balls of red flowers, you would have to check under Pelargonium
(but not in this catalog). These Geraniums are hardy perennials,
excellent for the rock garden and the border. They have attractive
foliage which is very deeply lobed. In many species the foliage provides
excellent red fall color. The flowers are 1-2" wide, five petaled,
and often have veins of a contrasting color. They are
relatively easy to grow, in either full sun or light shade
and any well drained soil.

Geranium ×
cantabrigiense ‘St Ola’ is from the same cross. Some authorities
say it is more vigorous, others that it has whiter flowers. We’ll wait
for a side by side test before rendering a verdict, but if you have
one you probably don’t need the other. As a side note this cultivar was
rated near the top in Chicago Botanic's extensive Geranium trials. |

The
Bigroot Geranium,
Geranium macrorrhizum, is a tough native species, equally at home in sun
or part shade. In our area it stays evergreen most years and the
burgundy tones in the fall and winter foliage make this a good 4 season
groundcover.
Geranium macrorrhizum ‘Ingewersen’s Variety’ is a named selection
with pale pink blooms with darker stamens. |

Geranium
‘Orion’ is an introduction from Europe that is supposed
to be a seedling of the very popular Geranium ‘Brookside’. I
think the flower color is similar to Geranium ‘Rozanne’ at her
best, but on a more upright, clumping forming (rather than a
spreading) plant. Long blooming and the color holds up in the
heat. |

Geranium
‘Tiny Monster’ is very new from the famous Countess
Helen Von Stein's Nursery in Germany. Apparently it is a cross
between G. sanguineum and G. psilostemon. The purple-violet
flowers are sterile so bloom time is extended from late spring
to late summer. |

Geranium himalayense has the
largest flowers of any of the Hardy Geraniums, intense
violet-blue and up to 2” across. It’s a moderately spreading
species that fills in thickly, so it works as a groundcover. |
