Heucheras & Heucherellas

Also on this page: Heucherella

Heuchera  (HU-ker-a)  Coral Bells

Native to the U.S., they form mounds of rounded evergreen leaves, and dainty bell-shaped flowers held above the foliage on thin stems. They are very attractive to hummingbirds. Often recommended for full sun, we have found that they do better in light shade. They will do well in most soils, but their shallow roots require good drainage. Mulch after the ground has frozen to prevent heaving. The plants should be divided after 5 or 6 years, as they tend to get woody and flowering diminishes.

I've tried out a number of these variegated leaf Heucheras over the years. One thing most had in common - they just weren't very vigorous. We've trialed Heuchera 'Snow Angel' for a few seasons now and it seems to be the exception. The bright white and green foliage stays attractive through four seasons and the red summer flowers are a nice bonus.

New villosa Heucheras

This season we have 8 new varieties from French breeder Thierry Delabroye. In addition to great foliage colors, these have all been bred from Heuchera villosa to incorporate that species' vigor and heat tolerance. Based on what I've seen so far this is the best new series of Coralbells, especially for the mid Atlantic and the South.

Heuchera 'Beaujolais’  "has huge, burgundy leaves with a touch of silvering and deeper purple veins. It is incredibly vigorous and is a very large variety of Coral Bells."

Heuchera 'Miracle'  "A "miracle" breakthrough in Heuchera breeding! This sister seedling of 'Tiramisu' PPAF produces pink flowers in midsummer. Its young foliage is chartreuse with a heavy smattering of reddish purple in the center. As the foliage matures, it turns brick red with a bright chartreuse to gold edge and silvered undersides. There's nothing quite like Heuchera 'Miracle'. "

Heuchera 'Tiramisu'  "is a very showy H. villosa hybrid and it represents a breakthrough in Heuchera breeding. In both spring and fall, the chartreuse foliage has a heavy smattering of brick red coloration that radiates out from the midrib of each leaf. During the summer, the leaves lighten to chartreuse and develop a light silver overlay. 'Tiramisu' has a fantastic compact habit, so it looks great in containers or as edging."

Heuchera ‘Carmel’ has colors that are similar to Heuchera ‘Amber Waves’, apricot to amber, with bright red Fall highlights. This was the first of this series to be released and after 2 seasons in the garden I think it is as good as advertised.

Heuchera 'Citronelle' is bright chartreuse, I think a better color than H. 'Lime Rickey'.

The next 5 are so new I’ve not seen them in the ground yet. Descriptions from the supplier.

Heuchera 'Pistache'  "is a robust grower with large, light lime green to chartreuse-yellow leaves depending on the sun exposure. The color is a perfect foil for blue hostas or purple-leaved heucheras. However, since the leaves are so light in color, this variety appreciates more shade than some of the other villosa hybrids."

Heuchera villosa 'Bronze Wave' is a selection from The Primrose Path of an American native with large, dark, bronze-purple leaves with bright purple backings. The small flowers are white blushed pink in summer. They say: "The plants we offer are a clone selected for vigor, habit, leaf shape, and retention of good foliage color through the season." It's been my experience that these H. villosa types are more vigorous here in the East and especially the Southeast.

From Terra Nova, Heuchera ‘Velvet Night’ is their darkest form, with large (up to 7” across) slate black leaves and complex metallic purple overlays. Tiny ivory flowers on dark stems. This was one of the first varieties from the Dan Heims heuchera machine and is still one of the best.

Heucherella  (HU-ker-ell-a)

x Heucherella is the name given to hybrids between the genera Heuchera and Tiarella. Like their parents they grow best in part shade in a moderately fertile, moist soil. Heucherella ‘Bridget Bloom’ was developed at Alan Bloom's nursery at Bressingham, England. This is a cross between a Heuchera hybrid and Tiarella wherryi. The leaves are light green, somewhat mottled. Flowers are light pink, held well above the mounded foliage. This sterile hybrid has a long bloom season, late spring into summer, and combines the best of both parents with the pink color of Coralbells and the delicate form of Foamflower.
