Agastache ‘Blue
Fortune’ has scented foliage and soft blue flowers on long spikes
over a very long bloom season. This variety is very attractive to
butterflies. In an informal poll taken, our Swallowtails chose this
plant 3:1 over nearby Buddleias. |

Could this new variety be named for
Rowan Atkinson’s character in one of the all time great British
comedies? Agastache
‘Black Adder’ is a clever, if not a particularly descriptive,
name. I’ve noted some European sites have the spelling as Blackadder.
Flowers are described as “smokey lilac opening from dark purple buds”.
I’m not exactly sure what “smokey lilac” looks like but the pics I’ve
seen have the blooms light lilac with darker backing bracts. North Creek
has it rated highly for bloom time and hardiness. |

Agastache
'Purple Haze' is a new variety, similar in form to the
Agastache 'Blue Fortune'. The supplier’s description “Vibrant
violet-purple flowers with deep rose pink calyces are presented on
strong, upright stems from midsummer to early fall.” I look forward to
trying this one out this season. |

less purple in it than many of the dark flowered cultivars. |

Astrantia major is the most popular species and has
many common names, among them Great Masterwort and
Gentleman's Melancholy, but also Hattie’s Pincushion
Flower, which I find more descriptive and interesting. The
blooms are green-white with greenish collars, sometimes
tinged pink to purple. |

We aren’t sure of the ancestry of
Campanula ‘Hot Lips’,
but it sure looks an itty bitty form of Campanula punctata. It has the
same spreading habit and the white, flushed pink flowers are the same
pendant bells, only everything is much smaller. |

Coreopsis ‘Full Moon’
is the newest form of this popular sun perennial. I haven’t seen it
bloom in person yet, but our supplier says “After eight years of
intensive breeding work with eight species of coreopsis, Darrell Probst
is releasing the first plant in his Big Bang (TM) Series. 'Full Moon'
PPAF is a showy hybrid with very large, canary yellow flowers that
measure up to three inches across. They are held on well-branched stems
atop a mound of healthy green, medium textured foliage. The plants are
long blooming, from about midsummer into early fall.” |
