These are close relatives of
the Asters with the same rugged and easy care dispositions
as other native species. They bloom in late summer and
fall, make great cut flowers and are excellent companions
for the blues and purples of late blooming Salvias.
Boltonia asteroides ‘Pink Beauty’
yields masses of pink daisy flowers on a relatively
compact plant with an informal flowing habit. |
|
|
Boltonia asteroides
‘Snowbank’
produces a blizzard of white daisies on a plant
that is also compact, but with a stronger, upright
habit. |

Calamintha
(cal-a-MIN-tha) Catmint |
|
Calamintha nepeta
subsp. nepeta is similar to the popular Nepetas but has much
smaller leaves and woody stems, like a small sub-shrub. The flowers are
near white to lilac purple, small and thyme like, in late summer and
fall. The entire plant has an intensely minty scent that is released
when the foliage is brushed against. |

Carex ‘Island
Brocade’ is sometimes listed as a
Carex siderosticha, but actually is a form of Carex ciliatomarginata.
The leaves are wide for a sedge, almost Hosta-like with gold edges.
Slowly spreading as a groundcover, edging or specimen. Tolerates heat
and humidity. |

Carex oshimensis
‘Evergold’ is a very showy form of sedge with long arching
leaves, creamy gold in the center with a distinct dark green border. It
forms a neat mound and really is evergreen in the southern part of its
range. |

Native to the eastern U.S., the
Turtleheads are excellent for the
wildflower, woodland, or bog garden. They are easy to grow in moist,
acid soil and light shade, but cannot tolerate full hot sun.
Chelone lyonii ‘Hot
Lips’ was selected by Dale Hendricks of North Creek Nurseries and
has deep green, lustrous foliage with contrasting dark stems. |
|
Chelone glabra
is another native wildflower, sometimes called the
White Turtlehead. The blooms are
similar in size and form to Chelone lyonii but are white, sometime
flushed slightly pink. |

This is the Asian version of our native
Turtlehead or Chelone. In form the blooms are not so turtle-like, more
like a Penstemon flower, a little smaller than our native species but an
intense ruby red ... very showy in late summer to fall. The leaves are
also smaller, but densely packed, making an attractive clump even when
not in bloom. I’ve seen
Chelonopsis
yagiharana also listed as Chelonopsis moschata. |

Coreopsis tripteris
Flower Tower Strain
is a new selection of an American native from our friends at Van Hoorn.
I have no experience with it yet but they say: "Thick stems with
dark green, leathery leaves that rise eight plus feet and end in large
bouquets of golden-yellow flowers. Vast improvement over the species
with stems that are 2 to 3 times thicker, a more profuse longer bloom,
and is overall more robust. Good winter interest and natural Finch
feeder. Excellent Midwest native that is superb for use as a privacy
screen, natural fence or specimen plant. A Van Hoorn Nurseries
introduction. 5' wide x 8' tall. Late summer - early fall." If you
have the space it may be worth a try. |

Coreopsis ‘Full Moon’
is the newest form of this popular sun perennial. I haven’t seen it
bloom in person yet, but our supplier says “After eight years of
intensive breeding work with eight species of coreopsis, Darrell Probst
is releasing the first plant in his Big Bang (TM) Series. 'Full Moon'
PPAF is a showy hybrid with very large, canary yellow flowers that
measure up to three inches across. They are held on well-branched stems
atop a mound of healthy green, medium textured foliage. The plants are
long blooming, from about midsummer into early fall.” |

Darmera (DAR-mer-uh)
Umbrella Plant |
|
Darmera peltata,
commonly called Umbrella Plant, possibly because of the form of it's
large (up to 18" across) leaves. In early to mid spring the flower stems
arise well ahead of the foliage. Blooms are rounded, blush pink. This is
a large and impressive specimen for a moist place - with constant
moisture I understand it will even tolerate full sun - but if it dries
out even once it will show leaf scorch. Like many Northwest natives it
does not appreciate the heat and humidity of the South. |

Delphinium exaltatum
is a native species, among Delphs probably the most adapted to heat and
humidity (but it still won’t thrive in the deep south) The flowers are
blue-purple, smaller than the fancy English hybrids - more the size of
annual Larkspur. Average to moist soils are best. |

Disporum sessile 'Variegatum'
is an attractive woodland groundcover (like a miniature Solomon’s Seal)
with white striped upright foliage and near white, pendulous, bell
flowers in spring. Blooms are followed by clusters of black berries.
This one does best in rich woodland soils and will go summer dormant if
allowed to dry out. |

Bright yellow daisy flowers are
common enough in midsummer, but what about early spring?
Doronicum orientale
‘Magnificum’ has bright, many petaled blooms that begin to color
just as the Daffodils fade. Excellent for cutting and easy to grow, they
thrive in moist soil, in sun or part shade. If allowed to dry out they
sometimes go dormant in midsummer, like Poppies. Otherwise the handsome,
heart shaped foliage remains attractive until Fall. I can honestly say
that since we’ve been growing these we haven’t had a single problem with
Leopards in the garden. |
