Gentians have a reputation for
being difficult, but there are a few species that are relatively easy in
rich, well drained soils that don’t dry out.
Gentiana dahurica
is probably the easiest and we’ve had success even in less than
ideal conditions. It has dark blue, funnel shaped flowers in clusters
above a central rosette of dark green, strap-like leaves.
Perennials with brightly colored
flowers and attractive mounds of foliage. They’re best in a sunny spot
with reasonably well drained soil. They should probably be divided every
few years to maintain their vigor. Geum ‘Mango
Lassi’ is a new variety introduced by Blooming Nursery
of Oregon. They say: "Large and delicate soft orange double flowers take
on shades of apricot to mango. Evergreen foliage clump stays neat and
compact."
Geum rivale is an old favorite of mine. It
served well in a problem soggy spot I had in the garden, but it will
also thrive in regular garden soil. In Europe they call it
Water Avens but here it’s known
as Indian Chocolate. The flowers
are held above the foliage, pendant and bell shaped.
Flower color
varies from white to pink.
