Phormiums

Phormium (FOR-mee-um) New Zealand Flax

All of the colorful leaved varieties have been bred from just 2 species of this Lily family genus. The leaves are strap like, coming to a point, a little like narrow Yucca foliage. They look like they should be sun lovers and some of the dark leaved varieties will take full sun, but I’ve found that the pastel striped varieties hold their color better in moderate shade, at least here in the mid Atlantic. A random fan may revert to plain green or bronze foliage - any of those stems should be removed or they will gradually overtake the plant. I've trialed a lot of different varieties over the years, the ones we offer now have been among the most stable and reliable I've tried. While they are not the easiest to care for and must be wintered in the greenhouse in Zone 7 and colder, they have great structure and make unique specimen container plants.

Phormium ‘Flamingo’ is one of my favorites with salmon, pink, light green and yellow all on the same leaf. Many of the pastel types are quite unstable but this one has really held up for me.
