shrubs with virtually no disease or pest problems.
Deutzia gracilis
‘Nikko’ was introduced to American gardens from Japan by the
National Arboretum. This very dwarf and spreading variety is
appropriate as a low specimen or as a groundcover. The plant is
covered with small white flowers in the spring. In the fall the
foliage turns a deep burgundy red. Gold Medal Award Winner. |

These are southeastern natives,
closely related to the Witch-hazels. Fothergilla ‘Mt Airy’ has small
white flowers that are Thalcitrum-like, all stamens and no petals, on
bottlebrush spikes. I’ve read that is a cross of F. gardenii and
the larger species F. major. I’ve also seen it classed as a straight
F. major. This species has exceptional fall color - a combination of
bright yellows, oranges, and reds. |

Heptacodium
miconioides, is a Chinese native, a large shrub that
can be trained as tree to feature its attractive exfoliating bark. The
late summer-early fall blooms are white, in clusters of seven (hence
the name Seven Son Flower). Later in the season the sepals turn
red-purple, and provide a show. The Kemper Center says it is a
good source of nectar for butterflies in the fall. |

paniculata ‘Pink Diamond’ is a very cold hardy variety, the
flower buds are tinged pink, the open blooms start out white but soon
turn blush pink and age to a deep pink. The flowerhead is about
equally divided between sterile and fertile flowers, giving it an open

Hypericum frondosum 'Sunburst' is a selection of a
native species made by Dr. Lighty when he was at Mt Cuba Center.
The attractive blue-green foliage forms a dense attractive mound.
The golden yellow flowers are surprisingly large, up to 2" across.
The many stamens form a large, full powderpuff in the center for a
"starburst" appearance. These are plants for full sun and once
established will tolerate considerable dryness. |

Daphnes have a well deserved
reputation as fussy plants. Even under ideal conditions they will
sometimes thrive for a few seasons and then wither away for no
apparent reason.
Daphne caucasica seems to be much easier and is the species
that most people have the best chance of success with. In our area a
position out of intense afternoon sun in average to rich soil is best.
It has fine, gray green foliage and a rounded, mounding habit. The
small white flowers are highly fragrant and bloom sporadically
throughout the summer. |
