Philadelphus (fill-uh-DEL-fuss) Mock Orange |
|
Philadelphus 'Snow Dwarf' is
a new Canadian selection (= very hardy). The double flowers are
pure white, very fragrant, and come in clusters. At 2-3' this very
dwarf variety is perfect for the perennial border. |

Physocarpus COPPERTINA
is an exciting new introduction from Proven Winners. They say: "A new
hybrid between Dart's Gold and Diabolo that flushes an attractive
copper in spring and transforms to a rich red in summer.
Coppery-orange foliage is a whole new look for this native shrub. As
summer progresses the copper foliage transforms to a rich red hue.
Dottted with pinkish-white flowers in summer. Bears red fruit in fall.
Bark on older plants exfoliates into papery strips." This one looks
like a real winner to me. |

Physocarpus
opulifolius 'Dart's Gold' is a showy form of native Ninebark.
The habit is different from other Ninebarks I’ve grown - more
pendulous and wide spreading as opposed to upright. The three-lobed
leaves start out bright golden yellow in spring and transition to
chartreuse by summer. In spring the white flower clusters, slightly
blushed pink, are very attractive and the red fall berries are
decorative. Older stems have a paperbark look. |

Potentilla
'Abbotswood' is the white flowered standard for shrub
Potentillas with a good, compact habit - dense dark green foliage and
a long bloom season. The flowers resemble single form roses. Once
established, Potentillas will tolerate considerable dryness. |

There are many gold flowered
shrub Potentillas available. I like Potentilla 'Goldfinger',
a cultivar selected in Holland for its relatively large flowers and
long bloom season. |

This old single form China Rose,
Rosa chinensis ‘Mutabilis’, was given
to us by the late J.C. Raulston to try in Zone 7. It’s been around now
for many years and gets no special treatment or coddling but still
thrives. This was a favorite of Graham Stuart Thomas’ and he describes
it ... ”The colour of the flowers is remarkable: they open from
slender pointed buds of vivid orange, flame coloured where the sun
strikes them; on opening they are soft pale chamois-yellow within,
while the flame of the bud continues to mark the outside. The second
day, after pollinating, they change to soft coppery pink, and on the
third day as they wrinkle and fall the colour deepens to coppery
crimson.” |

Salix
‘Hakuro Nishiki’ is a showy, fast growing willow that has
attractions in all seasons. The green and white variegated foliage has
pink and coral highlights, especially on the newest growth. In early
spring it has yellow willow catkins and through the winter the bark
has some red coloring. It takes well to pruning and shaping and I’ve
seen braided trunk specimens. |

Stephanandra
incisa ‘Crispa’ is a dwarf variety with a graceful, mounding
habit and delicate, cut leaf foliage. The stems sometimes root where
they touch soil making this form ideal as a spreading groundcover.
Small white flowers in early summer. |
