Physocarpus (fy-so-CARP-us) Ninebark

Physocarpus opulifolius 'Dart's Gold' is a showy form of native Ninebark. The habit is different from other Ninebarks I’ve grown - more pendulous and wide spreading as opposed to upright. The three-lobed leaves start out bright golden yellow in spring and transition to chartreuse by summer. In spring the white flower clusters, slightly blushed pink, are very attractive and the red fall berries are decorative. Older stems have a paperbark look.

Physocarpus COPPERTINA is an exciting new introduction from Proven Winners. They say: "A new hybrid between Dart's Gold and Diabolo that flushes an attractive copper in spring and transforms to a rich red in summer. Coppery-orange foliage is a whole new look for this native shrub. As summer progresses the copper foliage transforms to a rich red hue. Dottted with pinkish-white flowers in summer. Bears red fruit in fall. Bark on older plants exfoliates into papery strips." This one looks like a real winner to me.

Potentilla (po-ten-TIL-a) Cinquefoil

Potentilla 'Abbotswood' is the white flowered standard for shrub Potentillas with a good, compact habit - dense dark green foliage and a long bloom season. The flowers resemble single form roses. Once established, Potentillas will tolerate considerable dryness.

There are many gold flowered shrub Potentillas available. I like Potentilla 'Goldfinger', a cultivar selected in Holland for its relatively large flowers and long bloom season.

Punica () Pomegranate

Punica granatum 'Nochi Shibari' - We originally obtained this unique variety from the old Heronswood Nursery, when it was in Washington. This cultivar will eventually grow into a large shrub, up to 10' tall, with attractive glossy green  foliage. The summer flowers do an impressive fancy carnation imitation, salmon-pink and white. I've conservatively listed this as Zone8 hardiness, but I know gardens in Zone7 where it thrives, and I've seen large specimens of the straight species in Zone6. It can also be pruned to be maintained as a container plant in colder zones.

Rosa  Rose

This old single form China Rose, Rosa chinensis ‘Mutabilis’, was given to us by the late J.C. Raulston to try in Zone 7. It’s been around now for many years and gets no special treatment or coddling but still thrives. This was a favorite of Graham Stuart Thomas’ and he describes it ... ”The colour of the flowers is remarkable: they open from slender pointed buds of vivid orange, flame coloured where the sun strikes them; on opening they are soft pale chamois-yellow within, while the flame of the bud continues to mark the outside. The second day, after pollinating, they change to soft coppery pink, and on the third day as they wrinkle and fall the colour deepens to coppery crimson.”

Salix (SAY-licks) Willow

Salix ‘Hakuro Nishiki’ is a showy, fast growing willow that has attractions in all seasons. The green and white variegated foliage has pink and coral highlights, especially on the newest growth. In early spring it has yellow willow catkins and through the winter the bark has some red coloring. It takes well to pruning and shaping and I’ve seen braided trunk specimens.

Stephanandra (steff-an-AND-ra)

Stephanandra incisa ‘Crispa’ is a dwarf variety with a graceful, mounding habit and delicate, cut leaf foliage. The stems sometimes root where they touch soil making this form ideal as a spreading groundcover. Small white flowers in early summer.

Vitex (VIE-tecks) Chaste Tree

Vitex is a fast growing shrub with aromatic gray-green foliage, producing showy, lilac-like flower spikes in mid to late summer. In the northern part of its range and in severe winters in Zone 6 it can die to the ground overwinter, but will return and grow rapidly when the weather warms up. In Zone 7 and warmer it usually behaves as a deciduous shrub that can benefit from a spring pruning to keep plant form full. Vitex agnus-castus 'Blushing Spires' is the light pink flowered form.

Weigela (wy-GEE-la)

Weigela MIDNIGHT WINE (cultivar = Weigela florida 'Elvera') is one of the Proven Winners Series. They say: "From the breeder of Weigela WINE & ROSES® comes a new dwarf Weigela, MIDNIGHT WINE®, MIDNIGHT WINE is ideal for the front of the border or for edging the perennial bed. This tidy mound of dark burgundy-purple leaves can be used as an accent plant or a dramatic mass planting. Consider using it instead of ‘Crimson Pygmy’ Barberry: MIDNIGHT WINE doesn’t have any thorns! MIDNIGHT WINE is maintenance free and needs no pruning because its habit is perfect the way it is. Just give it sun and water and you’ll have intense color from spring to fall."

Weigela 'Eyecatcher' is a new dwarf variegated form from Proven Winners. They say: "Electric yellow variegated foliage and dark red flowers in the spring make Eyecatcher live up to its name. Attractive to butterflies and humingbirds." Like many shrubs with yellow variegation it needs to be sited out of hot all day sun. Morning sun would be fine
