Great Plant Specials

Buy in sets of 3 and save! ... see also Great Fern Specials and Great Hosta Specials

These Great Plant Specials have become very popular with our customers. The plants are not just a bunch of leftovers that we couldn’t sell, we select some of our most popular varieties and grow them in large numbers just for these specials. It’s a great deal for our customers, and, by growing them in large quantities and selling them in sets of three, we reduce our handling costs significantly, so we both benefit.

Amsonia hubrichtii is a newly popular native species of Blue Star that has starry blue spring flowers but with very thin leaves, almost needle-like, giving the plant a delicate, airy appearance. Even when not in bloom this is an outstanding foliage plant. The clear yellow fall color of the leaves is an added bonus.

I’ve seen a great deal of variation in leaf form, wide to thin, in the seed grown plants of this species. They may all technically be Amsonia hubrichtii, but if they don’t have the attractive narrow leaf...what’s the point? Our plants are all vegetatively propagated to insure a uniform, thin leaf form. Single plant price $8.95 ea.

Aquilegia chrysantha ‘Yellow Queen’ is a named form of the western native Golden Columbine. The large, showy blooms are deep golden yellow with long, sometimes lighter colored spurs. Here in the mid-Atlantic this species is by far the longest blooming and our plants generally flower well into the summer. If I were forced to chose just one Columbine to grow, this would be it. In the border. Single plant price $7.95 ea.

These are close relatives of the Asters with the same rugged and easy care dispositions as other native species. They bloom in late summer and fall, make great cut flowers and are excellent companions for the blues and purples of late blooming Salvias. Boltonia asteroides ‘Pink Beauty’ yields masses of pink daisy flowers on a relatively compact plant with an informal flowing habit. Single plant price $8.95 ea.

Native to the eastern U.S., the Turtleheads are excellent for the wildflower, woodland, or bog garden.  They are easy to grow in moist, acid soil and light shade, but cannot tolerate full hot sun. Chelone lyonii ‘Hot Lips’ was selected by Dale Hendricks of North Creek Nurseries and has deep green, lustrous foliage with contrasting dark stems. Single plant price $8.95 ea.

These South African succulents thrive in lean, well drained soils in full sun. The daisy shaped flowers need sunlight to open. Plants root along the stems and will form a thick mat in a short time. Delosperma cooperi has bright purple daisy flowers, on and off, summer and fall. This is one of the larger flowered species and the hardiest we know. Single plant price $7.95 ea.

Eucomis ‘Sparkling Burgundy’ is a form of Pineapple Lily that was selected by Plant Delights, in NC. The leaves are strap like, dark purple, very attractive. The unique flowers resemble tiny purple pineapples. This is an interesting and unusual specimen for the border in the South and a container plant in the North.  Single plant price $9.95 ea.

Our new favorite of this group is Nepeta ‘Walker’s Low’. It is a long blooming hybrid with good blue flower color and gray-green foliage, lower and tighter than other varieties. It does not require trimming as often.  Single plant price $8.95 ea.

I really like the Foxglove flowered hybrid Penstemons. Unfortunately most of the varieties I’ve tried simply do not survive here in the mid Atlantic. The closest I have come is Penstemon ‘Sour Grapes’, which has good showy purple flower spikes over a long season and has proved to be rock hardy here. Single plant price $8.95 ea.

We’ve grown Tiarella ‘Running Tapestry’ for years and while the markings aren’t as bold as newer cultivars, in the right spot the spreading habit is a real advantage. One of the best to use as a groundcover. Single plant price $8.95 ea.
