Salvia greggii types
Salvia greggii and relatives are southwestern natives with small leaves and woody stems, small shrubs in their home range, but herbaceous perennials further north. They come in a wide range of colors and are especially valuable for mid to late summer blooms that continue well into the fall. Once established they will tolerate considerable dryness. In our experience the hardiest varieties will frequently survive mild winters here (Zone6) with good drainage and mulching. There is conflicting information about the relative hardiness of individual cultivars. This group includes S. greggii, S. microphylla, S. lycioides, S. coahuilensis and close relatives and various crosses.
